Introducing Edmonton Chiropractor Dr. Wendy Coburn

I wish I had known then what I know now.

At the age of 17, I was in what they would call a "minor" car accident. I was wearing a lap belt in the back seat when we struck another car from behind. I was a bit stiff but nothing really noticeable, until 3 months later when I could not walk. My entire spine was in such great spasm, I had numbness in my right leg and lower back. I also got my first ever headache. If it was not for my physical education teacher in grade 12 who referred me to a chiropractor, I may not be where I am today and doing all the things I am doing today.

Edmonton Chiropractor, Dr. Wendy Coburn and her family. It took about a year to restructure my spine into its healthy curves again, and ongoing care in and outside of the office to optimize my health. I did not know at the time, but later found out, how important our spine's truly are and how they control our entire health.

I started my secondary education by receiving and Honours Bachelor of Physical Education at Lakehead University and went on to chiropractic college at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto Ontario where I graduated in 1999. My most memorable part of my education was the colleagues I have met along the way, the many many things I have learned from them and the paths they have laid down before me to allow me the freedom in what I do.

In my practice, West Edmonton Family Chiropractic Studio, we are working toward a community, a city of lifetime wellness chiropractic practice members. We hope to achieve this through the education we offer within our practice and within the Edmonton community. The miracles we see in our practice are also shared by our current practice members with friends, family and colleagues in order to make a difference. We are meant to live 80-120 years vital and on purpose, not staring at a ceiling waiting for our life to be over. As an individual starts chiropractic they need to decide they are going to work toward optimal health as well. It is not just about the adjustment. The individual needs to keep up with their adjusting schedules, exercise, eat right, and learn to manage their stress. The patients that respond best or feel especially nurtured are the ones that want a change for a lifetime and want to eliminated the cause of their problems and not just the symptoms. We do not do symptom care in our practice. Though elminiating the cause eliminates the symptoms, there is still more work to be done.

Some of the most moving and soul filling moments in practice are the miracles that happen every day. The greatest ones are where we don't see anyone in pain or suffering as they are working on preventing problems from ever happening.

Seeing a patient free of migraines after having them for 20 years, having another patient not have any symptoms or have to take any medications for the chron's disease that they no longer have.

Seeing a patient that a year ago were either going to buy a walker or start chiropractic and now are beginning a running program.

Having parents bring in their newborns to get checked and they are free of subluxation.

Having a new family bring in their 8 month old son due to ear infections, and after 6 months of adjusting has not had another. They are still bringing him in because they don't want his immune system not to work for him.

These are just a few examples of the miracles we see every day.

My husband and I have been married now for over 4 years and we have 2 children ages 2 and 6 months. Eric is the oldest and is full of energy. He loves anything to do with sports. Esprit, his 6 month old sister is just starting to grab things and play with toys. Both children received their first spinal check at 5 minutes of age to make sure they were free of subluxation. Playing with the children and spending time with my husband makes time fly by for me.

I receive chiropractic care on a weekly basis - There are so many things that everyone does each week that places stress on the nervous system that needs to be removed.  I also want to make sure I am at my best for God, my family and my practice members.  My husband and I work out regularly - 6 days a week. We are avid runners and have re-started our interest in triathlon so spend a lot of time on the bike or in the pool when the family is still sleeping. We trade off on our workouts so we don't complete the workouts when we could be all together.

Other health habits include eating a healthy diet as best as we can, avoiding the use of drugs and not vaccinating our children.

I am always amazed in competing in physcial events the free advil or tylenol samples they hand out - it astounds me! Why when people put so much time and effort into getting healthy that they are convinced it is ok to put a poison into their system.
